About this program
Help Create Our Community Sash Join us for a short Métis sash-making demonstration and learn how a sash is planned, prepared, and woven. As part of this community project, we are inviting members to choose a colour that is meaningful to them. These colours will be incorporated into a shared sash design. During the event, participants will have an opportunity to see the weaving process up close and add a few rows to the sash. After the demonstration, the sash will be completed using the colours contributed by the community. The finished sash will be a lasting reflection of the people, colours, and connections that make up our community. Choose a colour that is meaningful to you and add it to our community collection. Please email Kate before October 22nd with your colour and meaning if you want to share. Community members do not need to attend to add a colour to the community sash. Tracy Henderson is Métis with family roots in Manitoba and connections to the Red River Métis community. Her family lines include Muir, Johnston/Johnstone, and Stewart. Growing up, her Métis identity was not something that was openly celebrated, and at times it felt safer for that part of her family history to remain hidden. Tracy has worked to reconnect with and embrace her Métis identity. Raising her 5 children to know their history, be proud of who they are, and feel confident in their culture has also strengthened her own connection and inspired her to keep learning, creating, and sharing. She has a particular interest in traditional textiles and enjoys sash weaving, making ribbon shirts and ribbon skirts, and creating capotes. Tracy enjoys sharing what she has learned through hands-on activities and creating a relaxed, welcoming space where people can learn together, try something new, and connect with Métis culture through art and traditional skills.
