About this program
Join Burnaby photographer Jillian Chateauneuf for a hands-on workshop exploring how to use your iPhone’s long exposure feature to transform everyday scenes into expressive works of art. Review key iPhone camera features then head outdoors to experiment with ICM (Intentional Camera Movement), a photographic technique in which the camera is deliberately moved during exposure to blur, distort, and abstract a scene. The results often resemble impressionistic paintings rather than traditional photographs, emphasizing mood, rhythm, colour, and emotion over sharp detail. Under Jillian’s guidance, explore creative movements such as panning, tilting, and rotation to create painterly streaks of light and atmosphere. After your shooting session, return indoors to learn editing techniques that will help your images stand out. Once you’ve selected your favourite image, it will be printed on cardstock for you to take home. You’ll leave with several unique art images, one finished art print, and the confidence to continue exploring this playful and expressive approach to photography. $5 printing fee applicable. Instructor Jillian Chateauneuf. Based in Burnaby, British Columbia, Jillian has spent decades finding beauty through a camera lens. An award-winning photographer and educator, she is passionate about helping photographers of all experience levels discover and capture splendour through portraiture, travel photography, and photographic art. Besides supporting photographers through teaching, judging, and mentoring, Jillian has served on numerous industry committees and is currently Co-Captain of Team Canada for the World Photographic Cup. These days, Jillian happily refers to herself as "a Girl with an iPhone" and loves exploring the creative possibilities of mobile photography while proving that great images come from vision, not just equipment. When she's not taking photos, you'll likely find Jillian travelling, enjoying a chai latte (or margarita), or helping others preserve their treasured photographs.
