About this program
Inspired by the Kanienkehaka (commonly referred to as Mohawk) word, Kakhwí:io (Gak-wee-yo), meaning good food, this program will help us learn to cook while inviting us to think about how we are connecting to the land. Join us for a day of learning and reflection as we explore the connection between the near extermination of the North American Bison, often referred to as Buffalo, and the residential school system—two devastating acts that sought to eradicate Indigenous Peoples, cultures, and ways of life. Through two short films, we'll learn how the Bison has become a powerful symbol of Indigenous resilience, cultural renewal, and reconciliation. Participants will prepare and share a bison meal together and make an additional dish to take home.
