Julian Brave Noisecat shares stories, adding to layered themes of resistance, social change, and the roles of artists in responding to the world around them. His work as a writer, filmmaker, champion powwow dancer and student of Salish art and history complement the historical documentation of the artists within the exhibition, RESIST!.Julian Brave NoiseCat is a writer, filmmaker, champion powwow dancer, and student of Salish art and history. His first book, We Survived the Night, a national bestseller, won the Tadeusz Bradecki Prize for an imaginative work in English. His first documentary, Sugarcane, directed alongside Emily Kassie was nominated for an Academy Award, making NoiseCat the first Indigenous North American filmmaker ever nominated for an Oscar. A member of the Canim Lake Band Tsq’escen and descendant of the Lil’Wat Nation of Mount Currie, NoiseCat resides on Kitsilano Indian Reserve No. 6 with his partner and their son.Light refreshments to follow discussion.
